Why You Should Play “Costume Quest” This Halloween!
Why You Should Play “Costume Quest”
It’s almost that time of year again, the leaves are changing, the air is cooler and pumpkin spice everything can be found everywhere! Halloween is right around the corner, so what better time to talk about arguably the best Halloween game out there? Or is it the only Halloween themed game series? Hmmmm…
Anyway, this little gem came out in October of 2010 from Double Fine Productions and features the fun and humorous story of twin siblings Reynold and Wren and their neighborhood friend’s adventures finding candy and uncovering a plot by some evil “Grubbins” on Halloween night. During the game, the player character, (you choose either the male or female sibling), and friends trick or treat, collect candy and costume pieces to use as currency and during battle, respectively.
The fun comes in the form of battle, a mix of RPG turn based combat and quick-time events for special moves (think Super Mario RPG) makes for deep strategy and simple pick-up-and-play mechanics. Your costumes, which can be swapped between party members, determines each character’s role in combat. Healers, DPS and even tank classes are all represented by the different costumes. And costume pieces can be found and put together for new costumes to use during combat. There’s even a card collection mini game!
The story is light-hearted, and very funny at times. It’s a great game to play along with kids to get them into the Halloween spirit! There is even a small expansion called: “Grubbins on Ice” that I HIGHLY suggest picking up, and a sequel that takes place directly after Costume Quest. The games are short, and you can play them on almost any format, seriously! Check it out if you’ve got a few bucks burning a hole in your pocket this year, you won’t regret it!
